Relationship of Georgia Tech, GTRI, GTRC, and GTARC for research contracting purposes

Georgia Institute of Technology

The Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia, is a member institution of the University System of Georgia. Georgia Tech is one of the largest publicly supported technological universities in the United States conducting research for sponsors throughout the world.

Georgia Tech Research Institute

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is a major research unit at the Georgia Institute of Technology and is chartered by the Georgia Legislature. GTRI is an integral part of Georgia Tech, and its activities are coordinated with the research conducted by the academic colleges and interdisciplinary centers through the Institutes’ Vice Provost for Research. It performs investigations in engineering, computer science technology, and economic development for a diverse set of sponsors, including federal, state and local governmental agencies, industrial firms, and private organizations.

Georgia Tech Research Corporation

The Georgia Tech Research Corporation (GTRC) is a Georgia nonprofit corporation that works on behalf of all academic departments and all other non-GTRI Georgia Tech units, and serves as the contracting agency for sponsored research projects performed by the Georgia Institute of Technology. GTRC also provides administrative and financial support for Georgia Tech. GTRC is a 501(c)3 corporation. GTRC utilizes the cost principles defined in OMB Circular A-21.

GTRC owns all intellectual property that arises from research and other scholarly activity conducted by Georgia Tech (including the Georgia Tech Research Institute). The Office of Technology Licensing of GTRC administers invention disclosures, patents, copyrights, and licenses for both GTRC and Georgia Tech Applied Research Corporation (GTARC).

GTRC is the Institute’s Awardee Name or Applicant's Name. All grants and contracts are submitted through the Georgia Tech Research Corp. Therefore, awards will be accepted by GTRC and subsequently subcontracted to GIT for the project performance.

Georgia Tech Applied Research Corporation

The Georgia Tech Applied Research Corporation (GTARC) is a wholly controlled nonprofit subsidiary of GTRC that was established to serve as the contracting agency for work performed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute. GTARC is a 501(c)3 corporation. GTARC operates in accordance with the commercial cost principles defined in the Federal Acquisition Regulation, Subpart 31.2.

The Office of Sponsored Programs at Georgia Tech negotiates and administers research grants and contracts for both GTRC and GTARC. The Office of Contract Administration and the Office of Industrial Contracting are divisions within the Office of Sponsored Programs.
