Types of Funding | Office of Sponsored Programs

While the Office of Sponsored Research provides assistance and guidance in identifying, developing, processing, and submission of proposals for federal funding opportunities, there are many additional sources of funding available to researchers at Georgia Tech. See the list below for types of funding available to Georgia Tech researchers.

Federal/State

Federal government: The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DoD), and many others federal government agencies sponsor university research. All federal grants are managed by the Office of Sponsored Research.
State of Georgia: Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) is an independent nonprofit 501(c)3 organization closely aligned with Georgia’s Department of Economic Development. This organization invests in state-of-the-art research technology for university labs.
SBIR/STTR: For information about SBIR/STTR grant opportunities as well as assistance with writing grant proposals, please visit the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC). ATDC helps Georgia’s small high-tech companies and future entrepreneurs understand and make the most of the federal SBIR and STTR research funding. Completed SBIR/STTR proposals are submitted to the Office of Industry Engagement for processing.

Internal Georgia Tech Funding

EVPR Office Annual Programs: The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR) offers internal awards, including annual Faculty Research Awards, Research Faculty Teaching Fellowships, and the Georgia Tech Fund for Innovation in Research and Education (GT-FIRE).
Limited Submissions: Certain sponsored research programs limit the number of nominations or applicants from a single institution. The EVPR’s office is responsible for coordinating the internal decision-making process for these awards. It is the principal investigator's responsibility to notify the EVPR and OSP if he or she intends to make an application to a limited submission opportunity. Review the limited submissions policy.
Fellowships: A fellowship is a monetary award usually designated for graduate students, and many are nationally competitive. There are often specific requirements and expectations, and some fellowships are limited to particular fields of study.

Industry

Corporations and Corporate Foundations: Industry-sponsored research is handled through OSP's Corporate and International Contracting team. This team reviews industry-sponsored research proposals and assists with the logistics, including contract terms, research costs, export control, intellectual property matters, proprietary rights, legal issues, and material transfer and nondisclosure agreements.

International

International: International sponsored research — whether it be with industry, government, a university, or a nonprofit — is handled by OSP's Corporate and International Contracting team.
